Recently we recommended to one of our clients that they offer one of their services for free. Keltons Hardware and Pet is one of our regions most unique retail stores with a variety of items such as outdoor power equipment, paint, hardware, and pet supplies. Until recently they also provided a dog wash for $8. Our main objective was to drive more traffic to their store because we knew that once folks experienced their inviting store, wide variety of products and services and their expert staff—they would come back. So, we were looking for something unique that would differentiate them from their competition. One of the first laws of marketing is the law of being first. Therefore, the concept of Murfreesboro’s first FREE dog was was born. No one else provides a free dog wash and offering this service for free will create tons of goodwill in the community.

Plus - and a big plus this is - when a person wants to wash their dog for free they must sign up either in store or on the http://www.freedogwash.com website which helps us build their database for upselling and reselling them. Yes, for those of you wondering - http://www.freedogwash.com was available and we purchased it immediately. The other plus is that when a person brings their dog in for the free dog wash they have to walk through the store right past the amazing selection of organic and natural dog foods. The free dog wash became a “loss leader” in that while the customer gets an $8 service for free, they are much more likely to purchase their dog food, hardware, paint, etc., while in the Kelton’s store. We began a soft launch with the freedogwash.com website and through web based ads on the Daily News Journal Newspaper website and the WGNS radio website.

On average 3-4 people sign up per day for now, but once we post billboards, mail direct mail postcards, send out email blasts, launch the social campaign and run a few tv and radio commercials we believe the numbers signing up and visiting the Kelton’s store will dramatically increase.

Therefore we believe that FREE sells!
